How We Approach Deck Painting
Our deck painting service in Bergen and Passaic County, NJ starts with the part most painters skip: preparation. Deck paint fails for one of two reasons: it went onto a surface that was not ready, or it went on in the wrong weather. Neither is about the paint. A deck is a horizontal surface that holds water, takes direct UV, and moves with the seasons, which is a harder job than any wall in the house.
So most of a painting job is preparation. Washing, letting the wood actually dry, sanding back anything failing, spot-priming bare timber, and dealing with the fasteners and the end grain where water gets in first. Then the coating goes on inside the temperature and humidity range the manufacturer specifies, with proper time between coats.
We will also tell you when painting is the wrong call. Paint forms a film, so when it fails it peels and the next job is stripping rather than re-coating. On a deck with sound wood and open grain, a penetrating stain is usually the better decision, and we would rather say so at the estimate.

We look at the boards, the current finish and the fasteners, and check whether the deck is a candidate for paint at all. If stain is the better answer for your wood, we will say so.

Clean and dry
The deck is washed and then left to dry properly. Painting damp wood is the single most common cause of peeling, and the drying time is weather-dependent rather than a fixed number of hours.

Sand, scrape and repair
Failing coating is taken back to a sound edge, rough grain is sanded, and popped fasteners are re-set. Anything loose left under a new coat will lift the new coat with it.

Prime the bare wood
Exposed timber is spot-primed with a primer matched to the substrate, with particular attention to end grain and cut ends, which drink water far faster than the face of a board.

Finish coats and walkthrough
Coats go on within the temperature and humidity range the manufacturer specifies, with full recoat time between them. We walk the finished deck with you and cover when it can take furniture and foot traffic.

The Part That Decides Whether It Lasts
Everything here happens before the finish coat. It is also the part that gets skipped when a price looks too good.
Moisture before coating
Wood that looks dry on the surface can still be wet inside after a wash or a rain. Coating over that traps moisture under a film, and the film lifts.
End grain and cut ends
The ends of boards absorb many times more water than their faces. They get sealed deliberately, because that is where failure usually starts.
Fasteners re-set
Popped screws and nails are driven back before coating. Painting over a proud fastener guarantees a break in the film at that point.
Primer matched to the substrate
Bare pressure-treated timber, previously painted wood and weathered cedar do not take the same primer. The wrong one fails at the bond rather than the surface.
Coating within the weather window
Manufacturers specify a temperature and humidity range and a recoat interval. In New Jersey that rules out large parts of the season, which is why timing is part of the quote.
Railings, risers and skirting
The vertical surfaces are where the eye actually lands. They are prepped and cut in rather than rolled quickly at the end.

Which One Your Deck Actually Wants
These are different products solving different problems, and picking the wrong one costs you the next job as well as this one.
Paint forms a film
It sits on top of the wood, gives the widest colour range and the most uniform look, and hides a surface that has aged unevenly.
Paint fails by peeling
When a film finally lets go it lifts in sheets, and the next job is stripping rather than re-coating. That is the real long-term cost.
Stain penetrates
It soaks into the grain instead of bridging it, so it wears thin rather than peeling, and a re-coat is a wash and another coat.
Stain keeps the grain visible
If you like the look of the wood, stain is the answer. Paint is the answer when you have stopped liking it.
Previously painted decks
Once a deck has been painted, going back to stain means full removal. Usually the practical decision is to keep painting it well.
Composite decks
Capped composite is not a painting candidate in the normal sense. If the colour has gone, that is a board conversation, not a coating one.
What Drives the Cost of Deck Painting
Floor area is the smallest part of the answer. These are the factors that actually set the price of a finish job.
- Condition of the current finish
- A sound surface takes a wash and a coat. A peeling one needs stripping back to a sound edge first, and that is hours, not minutes.
- Railing quantity
- Balusters, posts and skirting are cut-in work. A deck wrapped in railing costs more to paint than a larger open platform.
- Repairs before coating
- Popped fasteners, split boards and soft spots have to be fixed first — coating over them buys a season at most.
- Product line
- Solid stains, porch enamels and premium deck coatings differ in price and in how many years they buy you.
- Weather windows
- Coatings specify temperature and humidity ranges. Working around a New Jersey shoulder season stretches a job across more visits.
- Colour change
- Going darker is easy. Going lighter over a dark finish means more coats or a primer stage.
When to call
Finish Problems We Get Called About
Most painting calls start with one of these. Each has a different fix, and only some of them end in paint.
Peeling in sheets
A film finish let go — usually moisture underneath or a skipped primer. The fix starts with removal, not another coat on top.
Grey, UV-burned boards
Bare wood left unfinished goes silver and dry. It usually wants cleaning, brightening and a penetrating finish rather than paint.
Mildew in the shaded corner
The north side and under-tree sections grow it first. It has to be killed and washed off, or it returns straight through the new finish.
Wear lanes at the door and stairs
Traffic paths wear thin years before the rest. Sometimes that is a maintenance coat, sometimes a harder product in the lanes.
Tannin bleed-through
Brown stains rising through pale paint on cedar and redwood mean the wrong primer went down. A stain-blocking primer stops it.
Finish flaking off composite
Someone painted capped composite. It rarely bonds for long, and honest advice is usually about the boards rather than another coat.

The questions homeowners ask us at almost every estimate.
Should I paint or stain my deck?
If the wood is sound and you like the grain, stain — it penetrates, wears thin instead of peeling, and re-coats easily. If the surface has aged unevenly or you want a specific colour, paint. Once a deck has been painted, going back to stain means full removal.
How long does deck painting take?
Usually two to four days on site, but it is weather-driven rather than labour-driven. Drying time after washing and the recoat interval between coats cannot be compressed without costing you the finish.
Can you paint a deck in the fall?
Often yes, but the window narrows. Manufacturers set a minimum temperature and a maximum humidity, and NJ nights drop below that range earlier than most people expect. We schedule around it rather than pushing a coat on in the wrong conditions.
Why did my last deck paint peel?
Nearly always moisture or preparation. Coating over damp wood, over a failing previous coat, or without priming bare timber all produce the same result a season later.
Do you sand the whole deck?
We sand what needs it. Failing coating is taken back to a sound edge and rough grain is smoothed; sound, well-bonded finish does not need to be removed for the sake of it.
Can you paint a pressure-treated deck?
Yes, but new pressure-treated lumber has to weather and dry first — coating it too early is a guaranteed failure. On an existing deck that has been in place a few seasons, it is normally ready.
How soon can we use the deck?
Light foot traffic usually well before furniture. We give you the specific times for the product we used at the walkthrough, because they differ between coatings.
Do you paint railings and stairs too?
Yes, and they take proportionally more time than the deck floor. Balusters, risers and skirting are all cut-in work, which is why a deck with a lot of railing is not priced by floor area alone.
