What Stain Does That Paint Cannot
Stain and paint are different physics. These are stain's wins.
It penetrates
Stain soaks into the grain rather than filming over it — the wood stays visible and the finish becomes part of the surface.
It fails gracefully

Clear sealer to transparent to semi-transparent to solid: how much grain shows is a choice at every re-coat.

Why Prep Decides the Stain
Every early stain failure is a preparation failure wearing a product's name.
Clean means clean
Stain locks whatever is under it into the grain — dirt, mildew, old failure. Washing is not optional and not cosmetic.
Dry means measured
Surface-dry and stain-ready are different states. We verify moisture before opening a can.
Brightening balances
Washed and weathered wood goes blotchy without brightener. It is a cheap step that decides how even the colour lands.
Old finish honesty
Penetrating stain cannot penetrate a film. If old paint or solid stain is flaking, the job routes through stripping — and we say so.
New wood waits
Fresh pressure-treated lumber repels finish until it dries — weeks to months. Staining early wastes the money and the window.
Back-brushing works it in
Spray lays stain on; brushing drives it in. The extra hour per hundred square feet is where longevity comes from.
What Drives the Cost of Staining
Square footage starts the estimate. These finish it.

What is the difference between staining and sealing?
A clear sealer repels water but carries no pigment, so it barely slows UV greying. Stain adds pigment — the sunscreen — in transparencies from barely-there to solid. Most decks here want at least a semi-transparent for the UV alone.
How often does a deck need re-staining?
Every two to three New Jersey winters for horizontal surfaces, longer for verticals. Kept on schedule it stays an afternoon job; skipped long enough, it becomes Deck Refinishing.
Can you stain over an old stain?
Over a worn penetrating stain, usually yes — same tone or darker, after a wash and dry. Over a flaking film or solid finish, no honest yes exists: that surface routes through stripping first, and we will say so at the assessment.
When can new pressure-treated wood be stained?
When it has dried through — typically weeks to a few months by season. Test is simple: water soaking in rather than beading means the wood is ready to drink stain too.
What stain colour should I pick?
On your boards, not in a brochure — the same product reads differently on every deck's species, age and light. We sample directly on your wood before committing to gallons.
Do you stain fences as well as decks?
Yes — fence staining is some of the most satisfying work we do, one afternoon turning a grey line into the frame of the yard. Panels are sprayed and back-brushed, one side or both.
Solid stain or paint?
Solid stain is the bridge: opaque colour that still breathes and wears rather than peels. Full paint builds a harder film with more colour choices and more commitment — that fork is covered honestly at Deck Painting.
How long before we can use the deck?
Foot traffic typically next day; furniture after full cure, which is product-specific — you get the exact times in writing at the walkthrough.
