What Composite Actually Buys You
The premium over wood is real, so it should be clear what it pays for.
No sanding, no sealing
Capped boards are washed, not refinished. The maintenance line in your budget effectively disappears.
Colour that stays
The cap resists UV fade that turns wood grey by year three. Weathering is measured in shades, not in stripping cycles.
No splinters
A real difference with kids and bare feet. The surface stays smooth for its whole life.
Freeze-thaw indifference
New Jersey winters crack finishes and check boards. Composite does not care, which is most of why it fits this climate.
Consistent boards
No knots, no crowning, no culling a quarter of the delivery. What is installed looks like what was ordered.

Where Composite Is Not the Answer
We sell a lot of composite. These are the cases where we tell homeowners not to buy it.
Heat on bare feet
Dark boards in full sun run hotter than wood. South-facing and poolside decks want lighter colours or a different plan.
Tight budgets, big footprints
On a very large deck the material premium multiplies. Pressure-treated wood covers the same area for much less, honestly maintained.
Painted looks
If what you want is a painted deck refreshed to a new colour every few years, composite fights you. Wood takes paint; composite should not be painted.
Structural repair in disguise
New boards on a failing frame is money buried. If the structure is done, the job is Deck Replacement, not resurfacing.
Full-sun heat plus dogs' claws
Cheaper uncapped composite scratches and holds heat. If budget forces uncapped board, wood is often the better compromise.
Historic looks
Some houses genuinely want real wood grain and a stained finish. Wood Deck Construction is still in our catalogue for exactly that.
What Drives the Cost of a Composite Deck
Two composite decks with the same footprint can be priced far apart. These are the reasons.
- Board line and cap
- Entry composite and premium capped polymer differ by multiples, not percentages. This is the largest single lever.
- Frame condition
- Reusing a sound frame saves real money. Correcting or rebuilding one moves the price toward a full replacement.
- Hidden fasteners and trim
- The clip system, matching fascia and picture-frame borders finish the deck properly and are priced per foot.
- Railing choice
- Composite rail systems cost more than wood balusters, and mixed metal-and-composite systems more still.
- Stairs
- Composite stair treads and risers with closed stringers take more material and labour per step than the deck field.
- Demolition
- If old boards or a whole deck come out first, tear-out and disposal are their own line.

They are all boards we are certified to install, at different price points with different capping. The honest answer depends on sun exposure, colour and budget — we bring samples to the estimate and price two options side by side.
Can you put composite boards on my existing deck frame?
Often, and it saves real money — but composite is heavier and specifies tighter joist spacing than wood. We inspect the frame first and correct it where needed; if the structure is failing, the honest project is Deck Replacement.
Does composite get hot in the sun?
Darker boards do — hotter than wood. For south-facing decks and pool surrounds we steer toward lighter colours or discuss whether a different surface fits better.
Is composite really maintenance-free?
Maintenance-light. It never needs sanding, staining or sealing — but it appreciates a wash once or twice a year, like siding.
How long does a composite deck last?
Material warranties run 25 to 50 years depending on the line — provided the boards were installed to the manufacturer's spec. That condition is why certification matters.
Can composite be painted or stained later?
It should not be. The cap is the finish. If you want a surface you recolour over the years, wood with our Deck Painting or Wood Staining services is the better fit.
What is the difference between capped composite and PVC?
Capped composite has a wood-fibre core; PVC boards like AZEK's have none, so they handle moisture and heat better and cost more. Poolside and full-sun decks are where PVC earns its premium.
Do composite decks need a permit too?
The boards do not, but the structure does — a new frame or structural changes need the same township permit as any deck. Resurfacing a sound frame usually does not. We confirm with your town either way.
