We install composite decks across Bergen and Passaic County as certified Trex, TimberTech and AZEK installers, and this page answers what people ask before they buy: which maker, which tier, and what the warranty on the brochure actually promises. Every line sells in tiers named after their warranty term, and the number on the brochure is not the whole story. What a warranty actually pays out, and what quietly voids it, comes down to fine print that differs by maker — worth knowing before you pick a board, not after a claim is denied. Composite is also not the right answer for every deck, and we say so before you buy it.

Samples in your light
We bring boards to the estimate so you judge colour on your own deck in your own sun, and we note where Low-E glass faces the deck before any colour is chosen.

Tier against tier
Two lines quoted side by side, each with its product warranty term and its fade-and-stain term written down. Tiers compete with tiers; a 25-year board is not being compared with a lifetime one.

Capped composite or PVC
Pool surrounds, full sun and decks with little air underneath push toward PVC. We say which chemistry your exposure wants and what it changes in warranty terms and gapping rules.

Colour and heat, honestly
Darker boards run hotter — in Trex's and TimberTech's own words. For south-facing decks we steer to lighter colours or Trex's SunComfortable range, and we say what that range does and does not fix.

Every Line We Install, by Maker and Tier
Warranty terms as each manufacturer printed them when we checked on 16 September 2026. Terms change, so we re-check before every quote.
Trex
Signature and Transcend carry 50-year limited residential warranties, with Transcend Lineage sold as a Transcend product. Select is 35 years and Enhance is 25. Refuge, Trex's PVC board, is listed at 50 on trex.com. Commercial use drops every Trex decking line to 10 years in the warranty's Table I.
TimberTech Advanced PVC (AZEK)
Vintage, Landmark, Harvest, Harvest+ and Solstice are warranted for the lifetime of the product for a residential purchaser, 20 years for a commercial one, under the warranty in force for purchases on or after June 12, 2026. The fade-and-stain term is 50 years for Harvest, Harvest+, Landmark and Vintage and 35 for Solstice.
TimberTech composite
Legacy, Reserve and Terrain are 30 years residential, prorated; Prime+, Prime and Premier are 25. Commercial is 10 on all of them. The fade-and-stain warranty matches those terms collection for collection, so the 30-year board really is 30 on both counts, at the same 5 Delta E measure as the PVC.
Fiberon
Concordia Symmetry and Horizon: lifetime on physical integrity, 50 years on stain and fade. Sanctuary: 40 and 40. Good Life Escapes: 30 and 30. Good Life Weekender: 25 and 25. Commercial decking is 10 years, and Fiberon's Phantom hidden fasteners carry their own 20-year term rather than riding on the boards'.
Deckorators
Voyage: 50-year structural, 25-year stain and fade, and 25-year removal and replacement — the only board on this page whose maker pays to take a failed board out and put a new one in. Vault: 50 and 25 with no removal cover. Summit, Trailhead, Vista and Venture: 25 and 25.
What the term does and does not pay for
Trex and TimberTech both exclude the cost of removing a defective board and installing its replacement, labour and freight included, and both prorate from year eleven: a Trex 50-year line recovers 90 percent in years 11 to 16 and 10 percent in years 43 to 50; TimberTech composite steps from 80 percent in years 11 to 13 down to 10. The brochure number is the ceiling, not the payout.
Fine print
Fade, Stain and the Conditions That Void the Warranty
The conditions are printed in the warranty PDFs, not in the showroom. These are the ones that decide a claim.
Fade is a Delta E number
Trex covers colour change of more than 5 Delta E (CIE) units for 25 years and more than 15 units for the rest of the line's term. TimberTech uses 5 Delta E for both its PVC and its composite lines. Weathering inside those numbers is not a defect; a board that greys past them is, and the claim is measured, not eyeballed.
Stains have a clock
Food, drink and mildew stains are covered only if they are cleaned off with soap and water within one week on Trex and TimberTech boards, and within 48 hours on Deckorators. Miss the window and the mark is yours. It is the one maintenance habit composite actually asks of you.
Improper gapping is named
Every maker ties coverage to its installation instructions, and Trex and TimberTech both list 'improper gapping' as an excluded condition. Fiberon says spacing requirements must be met for full coverage; Deckorators excludes any failure to strictly comply with its instructions. Gaps are set by the temperature on the day the boards go down, which is why we set them with a thermometer, not by eye.
Paint, punctures, heat and pressure
Trex voids its warranty if paint, solvents or any coating is applied and if the surface is damaged or punctured. It excludes damage from heat sources over 275°F, and its guide warns that a pressure washer above 3,100 psi can void it. A composite deck is washed — never recoated, never blasted.
Low-E glass and foreign fasteners
TimberTech excludes damage from reflected sunlight off low-emissivity glass and, in a clause Trex does not carry, any fastener not supplied by the manufacturer. Its Advanced PVC warranty adds failure to follow the care-and-cleaning guide and installation on an improper support foundation. Its installation guide is blunter still: an edge-driven fastener voids the warranty.
Transfer and registration
Trex and TimberTech each allow one transfer to a new owner, within five years of the original purchase. Deckorators' warranty is non-assignable, and its claims cannot be processed without registration. That is why registering the deck in your name is part of our handover, not a card left on the counter.
Capped Composite, PVC, Colour and Heat
Two board chemistries, one New Jersey climate. What the makers themselves say about heat, colour and what each board needs underneath.
- Capped composite
- A wood-and-plastic core under a bonded cap: Trex Signature, Transcend, Select and Enhance; TimberTech Legacy through Premier; Fiberon's lines; Deckorators Voyage and Vault. Product terms run 25 to 50 years. Trex, TimberTech and Fiberon all want joists at 16 inches on centre for straight boards and 12 for diagonals, so the frame is part of the decision.
- PVC
- No wood fibre in the core. TimberTech's Advanced PVC collections carry the limited lifetime product warranty and Trex Refuge is listed at 50 years. PVC is also installed differently: TimberTech's PVC guide wants board ends tight together with no gap at butt joints, 1/8 to 1/4 inch side to side, and notes that darker colours produce larger end-gap movement.
- Darker runs hotter — in their words
- Trex's guide: the darker the colour, the hotter the deck will feel. TimberTech's: all decking products will get hot in the sun, and the darker the colour the hotter it feels. Fiberon tells you to exercise caution barefoot in full sun. Nobody sells a cool dark board, and we say so at the estimate.
- SunComfortable and its limit
- Trex's SunComfortable colours reduce heat build-up by up to 35°F compared with its original boards. Trex adds, on the same page, that like all decking they will still get hot in direct sun on hot days, especially the darker ones. A useful step down, not a fix for a south-facing pool deck.
- Low-E glass
- Trex warns that Low-E windows can act like a concave mirror and char, discolour or bow decking. TimberTech says the same reflection can melt, sag or warp its boards, and its PVC guide tightens joists to 6 to 8 inches on centre for six feet in front of any Low-E door or window within 30 inches of the deck. We map your glass before we choose a colour.
- Air and slope underneath
- Trex: all decks need air circulation. Fiberon: unobstructed airflow under 50 percent of the perimeter and 1-1/2 inches clear under the joists. TimberTech: a 1-1/2 inch sleeper wherever airflow is obstructed and a slope of 1/2 inch every 8 feet away from the house. A ground-hugging frame limits which board you can honestly put on it.
Honest limits
Cost Drivers, and When Composite Is the Wrong Answer
We sell a lot of composite. These are the levers that move the price and the cases where we tell homeowners not to buy it.
The board line
The warranty ladder above is also, roughly, the price ladder. Where you sit on it — an entry composite line or a lifetime PVC — is the largest single lever on a composite quote, and it moves the price by multiples, not percentages. We quote two rungs so you can see the step.
What is under the boards
A sound existing frame that already meets the 16-inch spacing rule saves real money; one that needs added joists, blocking or a new ledger moves the job toward a rebuild. That verdict, and what New Jersey's regulation says about each route, is on Composite Deck Replacement.
Fasteners, fascia and borders
Hidden fastener systems — Trex Hideaway, TimberTech CONCEALoc and TOPLoc, Fiberon Phantom — go at every joist and are priced that way, and matching fascia and picture-frame borders are priced per foot. They finish the deck properly and keep the warranty intact; they are also their own lines on the quote.
Railing and stairs
Composite rail systems cost more than wood balusters, and mixed metal-and-composite systems more still. Composite stairs need closer stringers than the deck field — 9 to 12 inches on Trex treads depending on line, 12 on Fiberon — so each step carries more frame and more labour than the same step in wood.
Dark boards, full sun, Low-E glass
South-facing and poolside decks in a dark colour are where composite disappoints, and both major makers say why in print. A wall of Low-E glass facing the deck needs joist and colour changes before it needs boards. If neither is workable on your house, we say so rather than sell the board.
Painted looks and big footprints
Trex voids its warranty the day paint or a coating goes on, so a deck you plan to recolour is not a composite deck. On a very large footprint the material premium multiplies against you. Both cases point to Wood Deck Construction, and we will point you there ourselves.

Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon or Deckorators — which is best?
None of them wins outright; they sell in tiers, and the honest comparison is tier against tier. At the top, Trex Signature and Transcend are 50-year lines, TimberTech Advanced PVC is lifetime, Fiberon Concordia is lifetime on physical integrity, and Deckorators Voyage is 50 with removal-and-replacement cover. Below that, the 25- to 35-year lines from each maker compete on colour and price. We bring samples to the estimate and quote two lines side by side, in writing, with the product term and the fade-and-stain term on each.
What is the difference between capped composite and PVC?
Capped composite has a wood-and-plastic core under a bonded cap; PVC has no wood fibre at all. The warranty terms show the gap: TimberTech's composite collections are 30 or 25 years and its Advanced PVC is lifetime; Trex's composite lines run 25 to 50 and its Refuge PVC is listed at 50. PVC also installs differently — TimberTech wants PVC board ends tight with no gap at butt joints — and it is the board we reach for on pool surrounds, full-sun decks and any deck with little air underneath.
What does the fade-and-stain warranty actually promise, and is composite maintenance-free?
Fade is measured in Delta E colour units: Trex covers more than 5 units of change for 25 years and more than 15 for the rest of the term; TimberTech uses 5 units across its lines. Stains are covered only if cleaned within one week (Trex, TimberTech) or 48 hours (Deckorators). So: maintenance-light, not maintenance-free. It never needs sanding, sealing or a finish, but it wants a wash — and on Trex, keep any pressure washer under 3,100 psi, because above that the guide says the warranty can be voided.
What voids a composite deck warranty?
Improper gapping (named by Trex and TimberTech), paint or any coating and a punctured surface (Trex), heat over 275°F (Trex), reflected sunlight from Low-E glass and fasteners not supplied by the manufacturer (TimberTech), an edge-driven fastener (TimberTech's guide), and on Deckorators any failure to strictly follow the instructions or to register the product. Movement or settling of the ground or the structure under the boards is excluded by both Trex and TimberTech — which is why the frame matters as much as the board.
Does composite decking get hot in the sun?
Yes, and both major makers say so in print. Trex: the darker the colour, the hotter the deck will feel. TimberTech: all decking products will get hot in the sun. Trex's SunComfortable colours cut heat build-up by up to 35°F against its original boards, and Trex still adds that they get hot in direct sun on hot days. For a south-facing or poolside deck we steer to lighter colours, or to a different surface altogether.
Do I need a permit to switch my deck to composite?
It depends on whether the frame stays. Replacing boards on an existing frame can be ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7 — no permit — but only if the new material is 'closely similar' to the old, and whether composite over a wood frame qualifies is your construction official's call, not ours. A new deck or a new frame is a full permit. Both routes are explained on Composite Deck Replacement; the permit and drawings for a new build are on Composite Deck Installation.
Can composite be painted or stained later?
No. Trex's warranty is voided the moment paint, solvents or any coating goes on, and the cap is the finish. If you want a surface you recolour over the years, wood is the honest fit — see Wood Deck Construction.
Do you stain, paint or refinish wood decks?
No. Finishing, recoating and refinishing are not services we offer. We build in wood (Wood Deck Construction) and we take wood decks to composite (Composite Deck Replacement) — re-decked on a sound frame or rebuilt from the footings.
