Our deck refinishing service in Bergen and Passaic County, NJ takes a grey, rough, tired deck back to a surface you would put bare feet on. Refinishing sits between cleaning and replacement: the boards are structurally fine, but the surface — the top millimetre — is done.
The work is mostly subtraction before addition. Old failing finish comes off, grey oxidised fibres are sanded or brightened away, raised grain is smoothed and popped fasteners are set back down. Only then does new finish go on, and onto wood that can actually hold it.
Refinishing is also the moment of honest triage. Boards that are cupped, split or soft get replaced individually; if too many fail the count, we will tell you the deck is a Deck Replacement candidate rather than sand money into it. What Refinishing Actually Involves
The difference between refinishing and a quick re-coat is everything on this list.
Board triage
Every board gets judged: keep, flip or replace. New boards are woven in now so they weather toward the field.
Fastener pass
Popped nails and proud screws are set below the surface before sanding — for the finish, and for the sander.
Real sanding
Grey wood is dead fibre; finish applied over it peels on schedule. Sanding removes it down to wood that can bond.
Brightening after sanding
Sanded pressure-treated wood goes blotchy without a brightener. It is the cheapest step and the most skipped.
Mildew killed, not covered
The shaded corners grow it first. Sealed under new finish, it returns through it — so it dies first.
Finish within the window
Temperature, humidity and dry days are part of the schedule. A finish applied outside its window fails early.

What Drives the Cost of Refinishing

- Each replaced board adds material and weave-in time. The count is settled at assessment, not discovered mid-job.

- Vertical surfaces refinish by hand. A deck wrapped in balusters carries more labour than its floor area suggests.

The surface announces it. These are the announcements.
Grey wherever the sun lands
UV has killed the top fibres. Cleaning brightens it for a month; refinishing fixes it for years.
Splinters in bare feet
Raised grain and checked boards mean the surface is past cleaning. That is a sanding problem.
Finish flaking in traffic lanes
The path from the door wears first. When lanes show bare wood, the rest is a season behind.
Water no longer beads
The five-second test: sprinkle water. If it soaks straight in, the wood is unprotected right now.
Green film in the shade
Mildew on the north side spreads under furniture and mats. It wants killing before it wants covering.

What is the difference between refinishing and just re-staining?
Re-staining puts product on the surface you have. Refinishing rebuilds that surface first — repairs, stripping, sanding and brightening — so the new finish bonds to sound wood instead of to grey fibre and old failure.
Can a grey deck really come back?
Almost always. Grey is dead surface fibre, not dead boards — sanding and brightening reach the sound wood a millimetre down, and the colour that returns surprises most owners.
How long does refinishing take?
Typically two to four days on site, spread around weather: wood must be dry to sand and finishes have temperature and recoat windows. The calendar time is usually a week.
Will you replace damaged boards during the job?
Yes — cupped, split and soft boards are replaced and woven into the field before sanding. If the count climbs too high, we pause and give you the resurface-or-replace talk honestly.
Stain or paint after the sanding?
Penetrating stain shows the grain and re-coats easily; solid colour hides mismatched boards and reads like paint. We finish either way — see Wood Staining and Deck Painting for how each behaves.
How often will it need doing again?
With a penetrating stain, expect a maintenance coat every two to three New Jersey winters. The full sand-and-refinish resets much less often if the maintenance coats actually happen.
Can you refinish composite decking?
No — and be wary of anyone who says yes. Capped composite is its own finish; when its colour is gone the conversation is about boards, not sanding. We will tell you which situation you have.
Is refinishing worth it on a 20-year-old deck?
If the structure and most boards are sound, absolutely — age alone is not the verdict. If the frame is going, refinishing is money buried, and we will point you at Deck Replacement instead.
