Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

The backyard deck behind the Paramus home had taken on a dull, weathered look from years of sun and moisture exposure. The coating was peeling along the stair risers and a few rail caps, and the main walking area had patchy color from past touch-ups.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The deck had a mix of bare wood, old paint, and worn high-traffic areas, so the prep had to be handled carefully to avoid showing lap lines once the new coating was applied. The homeowner also wanted the work done without disrupting access from the rear kitchen door for too long.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We washed the deck thoroughly, scraped loose coating, and sanded the problem areas to create a sound surface for the new finish. After spot-priming exposed wood, we applied two coats of solid exterior deck coating in driftwood gray with brush and roller work around the railings, steps, and trim edges. The product was chosen for its durable finish and its ability to even out older wood.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The deck now has a clean, consistent color across the boards, stairs, and railings, with the patchy worn spots covered up nicely. The new finish gave the whole backyard a more maintained look and made the outdoor space feel more polished without changing the layout.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowner now uses the deck for grilling, coffee outside, and hosting a few guests without the tired, peeling look being the first thing people notice. It’s a simple update that made the space feel more put together.

Detail Work and Cleanup

The railings, stair faces, and edges were finished carefully, then the site was cleaned and reviewed with the homeowner.
