From Start to Finish
What We Found
The back of the Paramus home is one long wall with a kitchen slider and a lot of open yard behind it. The homeowners wanted a single raised deck that used the full width of the house, stayed clean and simple under the windows, and picked up the gray of the home's trim without asking for a painted finish every few years.
What Made It Tricky
A deck this long on tall posts has to be dead straight or every window above it shows the error. The grade also falls away from the house, so the posts had to be set to keep the platform level end to end. The homeowners asked that the rear kitchen door stay usable through the build.
How We Built It
We set the posts in a single line for the drop of the yard, framed the full-width platform, and surfaced it in driftwood-gray capped composite with hidden fasteners. A black aluminum railing runs the perimeter with white fascia on the rim, and the stair run is at one end so the main floor stays open. Framing went in first so the door was only closed off for the short window when the boards were laid at the threshold.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck is one straight gray line across the back of the house, level from the slider to the far corner, with the rail and white fascia picking up the home's trim. There is room for a dining table, a lounge set, and a grill without anyone standing in a walkway.
How They Use It
The homeowners grill, eat, and have guests on the deck through the warm months. Nothing on it needs painting, so the gray they chose is the gray it stays.

The crew set the post line for the grade and framed the full-width platform, keeping the kitchen door usable while the frame went up.

We installed the driftwood-gray capped composite with hidden fasteners and built the stair run at the end of the deck.
Railing, Fascia, and Cleanup
The black aluminum railing and white fascia were installed, the site was cleaned, and we reviewed the finished deck with the homeowners.
