Wood punishes casual building in ways composite never shows. These details are the difference.
Fastener metallurgy
Modern treated lumber corrodes ordinary steel. Hot-dipped galvanised or stainless, matched to the treatment — or streaks and failures by year five.
Board orientation
Which face up and how grain runs decides cupping direction. It is invisible on day one and obvious by year three.
Gaps for movement
Wood swells and shrinks with the seasons. Gapping is sized for the wood's moisture now and its life outdoors after.
End-grain sealing
Boards drink water through their cut ends first. Sealing ends at install is cheap insurance nobody sees.
Acclimatised stock
Lumber straight off a wet delivery moves after installation. Stock gets checked and rested so the deck is built at the moisture it will live at.
The finish window
New treated wood must dry before it can hold stain — weeks, not days. We schedule the first finish honestly rather than trapping moisture under it.
What Drives the Cost of a Wood Deck
Wood keeps entry prices honest. These are the levers that move yours.

Honest terms
The Maintenance Contract, Up Front
Wood decks are a relationship. These are the terms, agreed before you sign.
A finish every 2–3 winters
New Jersey freeze-thaw and summer UV set the schedule. Penetrating stains re-coat easily when the schedule is kept.
Grey is a choice
Unfinished wood silvers. Some owners love it — it is legitimate — but it is a decision, not neglect, and cedar wears it best.
Wash years between stain years
Off-years want a wash and a look at traffic lanes. Ten minutes of attention per season keeps refinishing years apart.
Watch the horizontal surfaces

Pressure-treated or cedar?
Pressure-treated is the budget-honest workhorse — structurally excellent, takes stain well after drying. Cedar costs more and repays it in looks, stability and natural rot resistance. We price both against your actual footprint at the estimate.
How long does a wood deck last?
Structurally, decades — our framing carries a 5-year workmanship warranty and is built to outlive it many times over. The surface's life is set by the finish schedule: kept, wood boards serve twenty-plus years gracefully.
When can a new wood deck be stained?
After the treated lumber dries — typically weeks to a few months depending on season. Staining too early traps moisture and fails; we give you the honest window in writing, and our Wood Staining service handles it when the deck is ready.
Why do some wood decks streak black at the screws?
Wrong fasteners. Modern treated lumber is corrosive to ordinary steel — the fix at build time is hot-dipped galvanised or stainless, matched to the wood's chemistry. It is invisible spending that shows up as the streaks you never get.
Is wood cheaper than composite?
At installation, meaningfully — and the gap grows with footprint. Over fifteen years the finish schedule narrows it. Large deck now versus lowest lifetime effort is the real trade; we put both numbers in front of you.
Can you build in hardwoods like ipe?
We quote exotic hardwoods case by case — spectacular material with its own fastening and finishing demands. For most projects here, cedar hits the looks-per-dollar target that makes sense.
Does a wood deck need different framing than composite?
The structure is the same discipline; the differences are spacing and fasteners. Wood boards tolerate wider joist spacing than composite requires — one reason wood retrofits onto older frames more forgivingly.
What if I stop maintaining it?
It silvers grey and the surface weathers faster — recoverable for years via sanding and refinishing (see Deck Refinishing) before anything structural is at stake. Wood is forgiving; it just keeps a ledger.
