Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

The homeowner’s 14' x 18' pressure-treated wood deck had faded unevenly after years of sun and rain exposure. The old coating was peeling in several spots, especially on the stair edges, handrails, and around the main seating area. A few boards also showed light surface checking, which made the deck look older than it was.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The biggest challenge was working around the peeling finish without leaving lap marks or visible patch lines. The stairs and railing posts also needed extra detail work because they had more wear than the main deck boards.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We started with a full cleaning to remove dirt, chalking, and loose coating, then sanded the worn areas to create a better bond for the new paint. After spot-priming exposed wood and problem spots, we applied two coats of a solid exterior deck coating in walnut, using brush and roller work on the railings and tighter edges for a cleaner result. The finish was chosen for its durability and its ability to help even out the look of older wood.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The deck now has a consistent color from end to end, with the railings and stair treads matching the main field of the deck. The deeper brown finish softened the weathered look of the boards and gave the backyard a tidier, more finished appearance. It also added a protective layer that should help the wood hold up better through the season.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowner now uses the deck more often for evening seating and weekend grilling. They liked that the space looks cared for without needing a full rebuild.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

On-Site Estimate

We met with the homeowner in Fair Lawn to inspect the deck surface, measure the layout, and review color options for the repaint.

2

Surface Prep

Our crew cleaned the deck, scraped loose coating, and sanded the worn areas to prepare the wood for a fresh finish.

3

Priming and Coating

We spot-primed exposed wood and applied two coats of solid exterior deck paint in a walnut tone.

4

Detail Work and Cleanup

We finished the railings, stair treads, and trim edges, then cleaned up the site and reviewed the final result with the homeowner.

“The deck looks so much better now. They took care of the prep work and the finish came out clean and even.”
