Why Posts Decide Everything
Every leaning fence in the county leans for the same few reasons, and all of them are below grade.
Depth below frost
Shallow posts get lifted by freeze-thaw a little each winter. Depth is the difference between a decade and a redo.
Setting matched to soil
How a post is set depends on drainage and soil. Wet clay and free-draining sand want different holes.
Spacing matched to span
Panels sized past their span sag between posts. Solid privacy runs also catch wind that picket lines let through.
Posts rated for ground contact
Ground-contact lumber is its own treatment class. The wrong class rots from the hole up, invisibly.
Grade handled deliberately
Slopes are stepped or raked as a decision, not an accident — it changes post layout and panel cuts.
Gate posts oversized
A gate cycles loads a fence never sees. Its posts go deeper and heavier, or the gate drags by next summer.
What Drives the Cost of a Fence
Fencing is priced by the foot, but the rate is set by these.
- Linear feet and height
- The obvious lever — but height also multiplies wind load and post depth, so six-foot costs more than 1.5 times four-foot.
- Style density
- A solid privacy fence uses nearly twice the board of a spaced picket line for the same run.
- Gate count
- Each gate adds oversized posts, bracing and hardware — a gate costs several times its width in plain fence.
- Terrain and digging
- Roots, rock and slopes slow the post holes, and the post holes are the job.
- Old fence removal
- Tearing out an existing line, posts and footings included, is its own labour and disposal.
- Wood species
- Pressure-treated is the budget baseline; cedar costs more and asks for finish — a Wood Staining plan keeps it looking bought-this-year.

How deep do fence posts need to go?
Below the frost line, which in North Jersey means well past the depth casual installs use. Shallow posts are why fences lean by year three — depth is the single biggest durability decision.
How close to the property line can a fence be?
Rules differ by town, and the practical answer starts with knowing precisely where the line is. We work from pins and surveys, not hedges and assumptions, and flag anything worth settling with a neighbour first.
Wood or vinyl?
We build in wood — it is repairable board by board, takes finishes, and suits the housing stock here. A wood fence with sound posts and an occasional finish outlasts most vinyl gracefully.
Can you match my existing fence?
Usually — style, height and spacing can be matched, though new wood will stand out against weathered runs for a season or two until it catches up.
Why do gates always sag?
Because a gate is a lever working its post every day. Ours hang on deeper, heavier posts with proper bracing and adjustable hardware — the fix is in the framing, not the hinges.
What maintenance does a wood fence need?
Posts and structure, none if built right. The boards weather grey unless finished — a stain every few seasons keeps the colour, and our Wood Staining service covers fences as well as decks.
