Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

The Saddle River backyard deck had lost its original color and was showing years of sun fade across the main walking area. Peeling paint on the stair treads, rough rail caps, and a few weathered boards made the whole space look tired and uneven. The homeowner wanted a cleaner look before summer gatherings started.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The coating had to cover a mix of old paint, bare wood, and high-traffic wear without leaving obvious patch lines. The stairs and railings also needed extra care because they had the most peeling and were exposed to the strongest weathering.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We washed the deck, scraped loose paint, and sanded the boards and trim to create a smooth, sound surface for the new finish. After spot-priming the exposed wood, we applied two coats of exterior deck coating in slate gray, brushing and rolling the railings, steps, and edge details for even coverage. The product was selected for its durability and its ability to help older wood look more uniform.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The finished deck has a more consistent color across the floorboards, stairs, and railings, with the peeling areas fully covered. The new slate gray finish gave the backyard a cleaner, more updated look without changing the layout. It feels more finished and better matched to the home overall.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowner now uses the deck for grilling, relaxing outside, and hosting family without the faded, peeling finish being the first thing they notice. It’s a simple update that made the space feel cared for again.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

In-Home Estimate

We visited the Saddle River home, measured the 15' x 24' deck, and reviewed finish options with the homeowner.

2

Surface Preparation

The crew washed the deck, scraped peeling paint, and sanded worn areas to prepare the surface for coating.

3

Priming and Painting

We spot-primed exposed wood and applied two coats of exterior deck paint in a slate gray finish.

4

Detail Work and Cleanup

The railings, stairs, and edges were finished carefully, then the site was cleaned and reviewed with the homeowner.

“The prep work was thorough and the color came out exactly how we wanted it. The deck looks clean again and the crew left everything neat.”
