Project Story
From Start to Finish
What We Found
Before the project, the rear of the Franklin Lakes home had a small, awkward landing that didn’t give the family much usable space outside the kitchen. The step down to the yard felt too narrow, and the existing setup made it hard to place furniture or move between the house and lawn comfortably. The homeowner wanted a deck plan that looked right with the home and made the backyard easier to use.
What Made It Tricky
The back door sat higher than the yard, and the lot had a slight slope away from the house, so the deck height and stair placement had to be mapped out carefully. The homeowner also wanted enough room for entertaining without making the deck feel oversized for the property.
How We Built It
We created a custom layout using a pressure-treated frame and composite decking for a low-maintenance finish that would hold up well over time. The design included a 17' x 24' platform, white vinyl railings with black balusters, and wider stairs to make the transition into the yard feel more natural. We also adjusted the shape and access points to fit the rear entry and leave open space along the lawn edge.
The Finished Deck
The final design gave the homeowner a practical plan for a more polished outdoor space with better flow from the house to the yard. The driftwood composite and clean railing package provide a simple, finished look, while the wider stairs make the space easier to move through. It’s a layout that fits the home instead of crowding it.
How They Use It
The homeowner now has a clear deck plan they can use for grilling, sitting outside, and hosting family. It turned an awkward back entrance into the starting point for a more usable backyard.

The Build Process
Site Visit and Measurements
We visited the Franklin Lakes home, measured the rear entry and yard slope, and reviewed the homeowner’s goals for the new deck.
Layout Planning
Our team drafted a 17' x 24' deck layout that worked with the back door height and allowed room for seating and a grill.
Material Selection
We went over composite board colors, railing options, and stair details before finalizing the design.
Final Design Review
The completed deck design was reviewed with the homeowner, including the footprint, access points, and finish details.
““They came up with a layout that made sense for our yard and walked us through every detail. The finished deck feels like it was meant to be there from the start.””
