From Start to Finish
What We Found
The old Oakland deck had taken on a dull, dirty look, with greenish mildew along the shaded side, dark runoff marks in the corners near the house, and grime around the back door and seating area. More than the finish, the layout was the problem: a plain rectangle that ignored the sunroom and put the stairs in the middle of the traffic path.
What Made It Tricky
The deck had to serve two doors, the kitchen slider and the sunroom, without becoming one huge platform. The neighbor's house sits close on one side, and the yard drops away from the house, so the posts and the stair placement had to be worked out on paper before anything was ordered.
How We Built It
We drew the deck as two sections joined with a breaker board, one off the kitchen and one wrapping the sunroom, so the board runs stay short and the layout reads as two rooms. The stairs moved to the outside corner and land on the paver patio. A horizontal cedar privacy screen runs along the neighbor side, and the whole platform is surfaced in brown capped composite with a black aluminum railing and white fascia on new posts.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck wraps the sunroom cleanly, with the breaker board giving the two sections a deliberate look instead of one long field of boards. The privacy screen makes the grill side feel like its own room. From the yard, the white fascia and black rail line up with the house instead of fighting it.
How They Use It
The homeowner uses the sunroom side for meals and the kitchen side for the grill, and guests move between the deck and the patio without crossing the seating area. It is a backyard with a plan now.

The Build Process
Site Visit and Measurements
We met the homeowner in Oakland, measured the house, the sunroom, and the drop of the yard, and talked through how the family actually uses the backyard.
Design and Layout
The deck was drawn in two sections with a breaker board, the stairs placed at the outside corner, and the privacy screen located on the neighbor side, all confirmed with the homeowner before ordering.
Framing and Decking
The crew set new posts for the slope, framed both sections, and installed the capped composite boards with the breaker board running between them.
Railing, Screen, and Walkthrough
We installed the black aluminum railing, white fascia, and cedar privacy screen, then walked the finished deck with the homeowner.
