Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

Before the design work, the back of the Township of Washington home had a small concrete step-down that didn’t give the family much usable outdoor space. The area felt narrow near the rear door, and there was no clear spot for a table or grill. The homeowners wanted a deck plan that would fit the house better and make the yard easier to enjoy.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The rear door sat a bit higher than the backyard grade, so the deck height and stair placement needed careful planning. The homeowners also wanted enough room for everyday use without making the deck feel oversized for the lot.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We created a custom layout using a 15' x 20' footprint designed around the door height and yard slope. The plan calls for composite decking in a warm brown finish, white railings, black balusters, and a centered stair run for simple access to the lawn. We also adjusted the layout so the main seating area stays open and the traffic flow feels natural coming out of the house.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The final design gives the homeowner a straightforward plan for a clean, usable outdoor space. The deck layout makes better use of the backyard and gives the home a more finished connection to the yard. With the materials and proportions mapped out ahead of time, the project is set up for a smooth build.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowners now have a deck plan they can move forward with for family dinners, grilling, and relaxing outside. It turned an awkward back entrance into a space with real purpose.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

Site Visit and Measurements

We visited the Township of Washington home, measured the rear entry and yard grade, and discussed the homeowner’s goals for the new deck.

2

Layout Planning

Our team developed a 15' x 20' deck layout that fit the back door height and left enough room for seating and grill placement.

3

Material Selection

We reviewed composite color options, railing styles, and stair placement before finalizing the design.

4

Final Design Review

We walked the homeowner through the completed plan and confirmed the footprint, access points, and finish details.

“They took our rough idea and turned it into a layout that actually makes sense for the yard. The plan was clear, and it feels like a space we’ll use all the time.”
