Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

Before the project, the rear of the Paterson home had an awkward landing and a small open area that didn’t work well for furniture or foot traffic. The step down into the yard felt cramped, and the existing setup made the backyard feel unfinished and harder to use. The homeowner wanted a deck layout that would improve access and create a more defined outdoor space.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The back door elevation and the slight slope in the yard meant the deck height, stair placement, and footprint all had to be planned carefully. The homeowner also wanted enough room for a grill and a small seating set without making the deck feel oversized for the property.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We created a custom design using pressure-treated framing with composite decking to keep maintenance low and durability high. The layout included a 16' x 20' platform, white vinyl railings with black balusters, and wider stairs for a smoother transition to the yard. We also adjusted the shape and access points to work with the home’s rear entry and the available space along the fence line.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The final deck design gave the homeowner a clear plan for a more functional backyard space with better flow from the house to the lawn. The walnut-brown composite and crisp railing details provide a polished look, while the wider stair layout makes the area feel easier to use. It’s a solid design that fits the property instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all layout.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowner now has a deck plan they can actually picture using for meals outside, summer gatherings, and quiet evenings. It gave them a clear direction for turning the backyard into a more comfortable hangout spot.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

Site Visit and Measure-Up

We visited the Paterson property, measured the rear entry and yard slope, and gathered the details needed for the design.

2

Layout Planning

Our team developed a custom 16' x 20' deck layout that fit the back door height and left room for seating and grilling.

3

Material Selection

We reviewed composite board options, railing styles, and stair configurations with the homeowner before finalizing the plan.

4

Final Design Review

The finished deck design was presented with notes on structure, access, and finish details so the homeowner could move forward with confidence.

“They came up with a layout that made sense for our yard and the house. Everything was explained clearly, and the finished deck feels like it belongs there.”
