Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

The Woodland Park deck had faded to a gray-brown color with uneven wear across the walking surface, especially near the back door and stair landing. Several boards had raised grain and old stain buildup, and the rail caps showed water spots from repeated exposure through the winter and spring. The homeowner wanted the space refreshed before using it more often in the warmer months.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The deck sat under partial shade from nearby trees, so the boards held moisture longer and needed extra drying time before staining. There were also a few tight corners around the stairs and posts that required careful prep work to make sure the finish went on evenly.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We started with a full deck cleaning to remove dirt, mildew, and loose residue, then sanded the surface to smooth out rough boards and open the wood grain for better stain absorption. After the deck dried properly, we applied a semi-transparent cedar stain by hand and with pads, working section by section to keep the color consistent across the floorboards, railings, and stair treads. Final touch-ups were done around the edges and posts for a clean, even finish.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The finished deck now has a warmer wood tone with more uniform color across the boards, rails, and steps. The refinishing brought out the natural grain again and gave the space a cleaner look without making it feel overly coated. It’s a noticeable improvement that makes the backyard feel more maintained and ready for regular use.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowner can use the deck for grilling, sitting outside, and hosting family without the worn, faded look. They also have better protection on the wood heading into the next season.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

In-Home Estimate

We met with the homeowner in Woodland Park to inspect the 15' x 24' deck and review stain color options.

2

Cleaning and Prep

The deck was washed thoroughly, and the loose buildup and surface grime were removed before sanding.

3

Sanding and Refinishing

Our crew sanded the weathered boards and applied semi-transparent cedar stain to the deck surface, steps, and railings.

4

Final Touches

We completed detail work around corners and posts, then reviewed the finished refinishing job with the homeowner.

“The deck had seen better days, and now it looks clean and solid again. The crew was on time, easy to talk to, and kept the job moving.”
