Project Story
From Start to Finish
What We Found
The backyard had an older wood deck that was starting to show its age, with faded boards, a few soft spots near the steps, and railings that no longer felt as solid as they should. The surface had turned dull and uneven from weather exposure, and the space was too small for a proper seating area. The homeowner wanted something that looked cleaner and would hold up better with less upkeep.
What Made It Tricky
The deck had to tie into a rear entry that sat a little higher than the yard, so the stair layout and final height needed to be planned carefully. There was also limited room near the side of the house, which meant the footprint had to stay compact without making the deck feel cramped.
How We Built It
We removed the old structure and built a new pressure-treated frame sized for the yard and back-door elevation. The deck surface was finished with TimberTech composite boards in Coastal Gray, paired with a matching picture-frame border for a more polished look. White vinyl railings with black balusters and wider code-compliant stairs completed the build and gave the project a clean, balanced finish.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck now provides a solid, low-maintenance outdoor space that feels much more open and usable than the old platform. The gray composite boards and crisp railing details give the backyard a fresh look that works well with the home’s exterior. It’s a noticeable upgrade in both appearance and day-to-day function.
How They Use It
The homeowner now uses the deck for grilling, sitting outside in the evening, and hosting family on weekends. They like that it looks sharp without needing constant staining or repairs.
