Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

Before the project, the Paterson home had a small concrete slab and an aging step-down area that felt cramped and dated. The surface had visible cracking, and the transition from the back door to the yard was awkward for everyday use. The homeowner wanted a patio deck that would look better and hold up well without constant upkeep.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The backyard had a slight slope, so we needed to set the height carefully and keep the walking surface level from the back door out to the yard. The homeowner also wanted enough room for a compact dining set and grill without making the deck feel oversized for the lot.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We installed a pressure-treated frame on properly set footings and finished it with TimberTech composite decking for a durable, low-maintenance surface. A Kona Brown field with a Coastal Gray border gave the deck a finished look, and black aluminum railings were added for safety and a clean contrast. We also built a short stair run to make the transition to the lawn easy to use.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The finished patio deck gives the backyard a more useful footprint and a cleaner look from the house. The composite surface sits evenly, the colors work well with the exterior, and the railing package keeps the design simple. It replaced a worn concrete area with a space that feels built for everyday use.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowners now use the deck for morning coffee, weekend grilling, and sitting outside with family. It made the back of the house feel more open and practical.

We met the homeowner in Paterson, reviewed the old slab and back entry, and measured the area for the new patio deck.

2

Layout and Material Selection

Our team finalized the 14' x 18' footprint and selected TimberTech decking, border colors, and railing style.

3

Framing and Footing Installation

We set the footings and built the pressure-treated frame to handle the yard slope and deck height.

4

Composite Deck Build

The TimberTech boards, picture-frame border, black aluminum railings, and stair section were installed and secured.

5

Cleanup and Final Walkthrough

We cleaned the site, checked the finished details, and reviewed the completed patio deck with the homeowner.

“The old back area was worn out, and this new deck makes the whole yard easier to use. The crew kept everything organized and the finish looks really clean.”
