Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

Before the project, the backyard had a small concrete pad that felt cramped and didn’t create much of a transition from the house to the lawn. The surface was plain, and the area outside the slider didn’t leave enough room for chairs or a grill without crowding the walkway. The homeowner wanted a patio deck that would make the space more useful and easier to enjoy.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The rear of the house sat slightly above the yard, so the deck height and stair layout had to be measured carefully to keep the drop comfortable and code-compliant. The footprint also needed to stay compact enough to preserve open lawn space while still giving the homeowner a usable seating area.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We built a pressure-treated frame sized to the existing rear entry and topped it with composite decking for a low-maintenance finish. White vinyl railings with black balusters gave the project a clean look, and the wide stair run was positioned to line up naturally with the backyard grade. The materials and layout were chosen to keep the deck practical, durable, and easy to use year-round.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The finished patio deck now feels like a real extension of the home instead of a small, unused landing. The driftwood boards and crisp railing details give the backyard a neater, more finished appearance, while the new stairs make moving between the house and yard much easier. It’s a straightforward upgrade that changed how the space functions every day.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowners now use the deck for coffee in the morning, grilling, and sitting outside with friends. It gave them a comfortable spot that works well without taking over the yard.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

Free Estimate

We visited the Oakland home, measured the rear entry area, and reviewed the homeowner’s goals for the patio deck.

2

Layout Planning

Our team finalized a compact 15' x 18' layout that would fit the backyard and leave room for open lawn space.

3

Framing and Footings

We set the support structure and built the frame to the proper height for the rear slider and yard grade.

4

Decking, Railings, and Stairs

The composite boards, vinyl railings, black balusters, and 4-step stair run were installed to complete the build.

5

Cleanup and Walkthrough

We cleaned the site, checked the finished details, and reviewed the new patio deck with the homeowner.

“The deck came out just like we talked about. The crew was easy to work with, kept the jobsite tidy, and the finished space fits our yard really well.”
