From Start to Finish
What We Found
The existing deck behind the Paterson home had reached the point where repairs were no longer practical. Several boards near the threshold were soft, the railings had movement, and the surface had faded unevenly with stains from rain and mildew. The homeowners wanted to replace it before the damage spread any further and make the back entrance safer to use.
What Made It Tricky
The replacement had to fit the same footprint while improving the transition from the back door and keeping the stairs comfortable on the existing grade. Space along the side of the house was tight, so the new layout needed to stay compact without feeling cramped.
How We Built It
We demoed the old deck and built a new pressure-treated frame to match the rear entry height and yard conditions. The finished surface was installed with composite decking in a cedar tone, and we added white vinyl railings with black balusters for a crisp contrast. A wider stair run and a small landing at the door helped make the whole space easier to use day to day.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck gives the back of the house a cleaner, more finished look and solves the issues that came with the old structure. The composite boards sit flat and even, the railings feel secure, and the new stairs make the yard access much more comfortable. It turned a worn-out deck into a space that feels solid and ready for regular use.
How They Use It
The homeowners now use the deck for grilling, stepping out to the yard, and sitting outside with family without worrying about soft boards or wobbly rails. It’s become a more useful part of the home instead of a problem area.
