From Start to Finish
What We Found
The Paterson property had a weathered rear deck with gray buildup on the boards, green mildew starting along the shaded edges, and dirt packed into the rail gaps. The railings and stair treads showed the most wear near the back door, where foot traffic was heaviest. The homeowner wanted the deck ready for cookouts and weekend get-togethers, and it was clear a wash alone would not get it there.
What Made It Tricky
The deck sits under partial shade from a mature maple, which keeps the surface damp longer and had been working on the framing as well as the boards. The lot is tight, so the old deck had to come out in pieces through the side yard, and the new stair run had to land cleanly on the existing stone patio below.
How We Built It
We removed the old deck down to the ground and built a new frame with ground-contact-rated lumber, then surfaced it in brown capped composite with hidden fasteners. A black aluminum railing runs the full perimeter, a white lattice skirt closes in the space under the platform, and a straight stair run drops from the deck to the patio with a matching rail on both sides. Everything above grade is composite or aluminum, so the shade no longer decides how the deck ages.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck is a clean, even brown from the back door to the top of the stairs, with the railings and stair treads matching the main floor. The shaded corners that used to go green now just need a hose. It looks like it belongs to the house instead of something the homeowner had to keep apologizing for.
How They Use It
The homeowner uses the deck for outdoor meals and weekend hosting without scheduling a scrub first. The stair down to the patio makes the whole backyard feel connected instead of split in two.

House of Decks LLC inspected the shaded rear deck, probed the framing from below, and walked the homeowner through why a rebuild made more sense than another cleaning.
Demolition
The crew took the old deck apart in sections and carried it out through the side yard without disturbing the patio or the plantings.
Framing and Decking
We set a new ground-contact-rated frame and installed the capped composite boards with hidden fasteners, then built the stair run down to the patio.
Railing, Skirt, and Walkthrough
The black aluminum railing and lattice skirt went on last, and we walked the finished deck with the homeowner before clearing the site.
