From Start to Finish
What We Found
Before the project, the Oakland deck showed wear in the spots that get the most foot traffic. The boards near the back door had started to feel soft, a few planks along the railing line were cupped, and the stair area had movement that made the homeowner cautious about using it. The footprint was fine; the structure was the question.
What Made It Tricky
Soft boards near a door usually mean the joists below have been wet for years, and the probe confirmed it. Replacing a deck at this height means new posts and a new stair run, and the stair had to land in the same place so the path to the yard did not change.
How We Built It
We removed the old deck completely and built a new frame on new posts, then wrapped the posts and the stair stringers in white. The surface is capped composite with hidden fasteners, the railing is black aluminum on the deck and both sides of the stair, and the stair was rebuilt as one straight flight with closed risers. Everything that failed on the old deck is now either composite, aluminum, or fresh rated lumber.
The Finished Deck
The deck feels stable underfoot from the door to the bottom step, the railing does not move, and the stairs no longer have the give that was there before. From the yard, the white posts and black rail make it look like the deck was always meant to be there.
How They Use It
The homeowner uses the deck again for grilling, stepping out to the yard, and hosting family without second-guessing the boards or the railing. It is back to being a normal part of the home.

The Build Process
On-Site Inspection
We visited the Oakland property, checked the soft boards and loose railing, and probed the framing below to confirm the deck needed replacing rather than patching.
Demolition
The crew removed the old deck, railing, and stairs down to the ground and cleared the site for the new posts.
Framing and Decking
We set new posts, framed the deck on the original footprint, and installed the capped composite boards with hidden fasteners.
Stairs, Railing, and Walkthrough
The new stair run, white post wraps, and black aluminum railing were installed, and we walked the finished deck with the homeowner.
