Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

The existing rear deck had reached the point where patching no longer made sense. Several boards near the door were soft, the railing posts had noticeable movement, and the stain had worn off unevenly, leaving the surface blotchy and weathered. The homeowners also mentioned that the stairs felt narrow and awkward when bringing items in and out of the house.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The replacement had to fit the same footprint while improving the stair layout and making the transition from the back door safer. The yard also had a slight grade change, so the framing and step heights needed to be measured carefully to keep everything level and comfortable to use.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We demolished the old deck and built a new pressure-treated frame sized to the existing opening and yard conditions. For the finished surface, we installed TimberTech composite decking in Walnut Grove and paired it with white vinyl railings and black balusters for a clean contrast. Wider steps and updated trim details were added to improve access and give the project a more finished look.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The completed deck now feels sturdy and looks much more polished from the back of the house. The new composite surface is even, the railings are tight, and the wider stairs make the whole space easier to use. It turned a tired, aging structure into a backyard feature that matches the home better.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowners now use the deck for grilling, morning coffee, and stepping out to the yard without worrying about soft boards or shaky railings. It’s become a more comfortable spot for daily use and small get-togethers.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

In-Home Estimate

We met the homeowner in Paramus, inspected the old deck, and discussed replacement options, colors, and railing styles.

2

Demolition and Site Prep

The aging deck was removed and the area was cleared and prepped for the new frame and footings.

3

Framing and Structural Build

Our crew built the new pressure-treated framing and set the deck height to work with the back door and yard grade.

4

Composite Deck Installation

We installed the TimberTech Walnut Grove boards, finished the white vinyl railings with black balusters, and built wider stairs.

5

Final Cleanup and Walkthrough

After the finishing touches, we cleaned the job site and reviewed the completed deck replacement with the homeowner.

“The old deck was in rough shape, and the new one feels solid and looks great with the house. The crew worked clean and finished everything on time.”
