From Start to Finish
What We Found
The backyard deck had started showing its age with a few spongy boards around the lower landing, faded surfaces, and a railing section that moved more than it should have. One stair tread had a split near the edge, and fasteners in a couple of spots were beginning to lift. The homeowner noticed the damage most when carrying things in and out from the back door.
What Made It Tricky
The yard slopes away from the house toward a retaining wall, so the new posts are all different heights and each one had to be set to keep the platform level. The deck sits right at the rear entrance, which meant staging the work so the family could keep using the doors for most of the build.
How We Built It
We removed the old deck down to the ground, set new posts into the slope, and framed the platform level across the back of the house. The surface is capped composite with hidden fasteners, the rim is wrapped in white, and a black aluminum railing runs the full perimeter and both sides of the stair. The stair was rebuilt with composite treads and closed white risers down to the lower yard.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck is level and solid from the doors to the far corner, with a stair that lands firmly on the lower ground instead of bouncing. The soft spots, the split tread, and the loose rail are gone, and the raw grading under the deck will disappear as soon as the lawn fills in.
How They Use It
The homeowner uses the deck for grilling, sitting outside, and moving between the house and yard without thinking about loose boards. The stair down the slope is safe to carry things on now.

The new stair run, white fascia, and black aluminum railing were installed, then we cleaned up and reviewed the finished deck with the homeowner.
