Paterson Deck Repair for a Weathered Backyard Deck

Project Story
From Start to Finish
What We Found
The backyard deck had started showing its age with a few spongy boards around the lower landing, faded surfaces, and a railing section that moved more than it should have. One stair tread also had a split near the edge, and the fasteners in a couple of spots were beginning to lift. The homeowner noticed the damage most when carrying things in and out from the back door.
What Made It Tricky
The repair had to match the existing deck closely enough that the patched areas wouldn’t stand out, even though some of the boards were more sun-faded than others. Since the deck sits close to the rear entrance, the work also needed to be done without blocking access for the family all day.
How We Built It
We removed the damaged boards, checked the joists and connections underneath, and secured the loose framing with new exterior-rated hardware. Replacement pressure-treated boards were cut to fit the existing layout, and the railing sections were repaired and re-fastened for a firmer grip. We also reset the stair tread and cleaned up the repaired areas so the deck stayed consistent with the rest of the structure.
The Finished Deck
The repaired deck now feels stable underfoot, with tighter railings and clean board replacements that blend in with the existing surface. The soft spots and split tread are gone, and the rear entry looks much more cared for overall. It’s a solid fix that extended the life of the deck without needing a full rebuild.
How They Use It
The homeowner can use the deck again for grilling, sitting outside, and moving between the house and yard without worrying about loose boards. It’s now a safer spot for everyday use.
