From Start to Finish
What We Found
The deck behind the Paterson home had weathered heavily, with sun fading across the boards, peeling at the step edges, and mildew on the shaded side near the house. The space is small and tight, wedged between the house and the garage, and the old deck was not doing much with it.
What Made It Tricky
Low decks in tight Paterson yards rot from underneath when water has nowhere to go, so drainage had to be designed before the frame went in. Access along the side yard is narrow, which meant staging demolition and deliveries carefully and keeping the work area clean for the homeowner.
How We Built It
We removed the old deck and built a near-grade platform on ground-contact-rated framing, with a gravel border along every open edge to move water away from the frame. The surface is cedar-tone capped composite with hidden fasteners, so the homeowner has the warm wood look without the staining. A black aluminum railing runs the open sides.
The Finished Deck
The finished patio deck is a clean, even cedar color a step above the gravel, and it turns the gap between the house and garage into a usable outdoor room. The boards will not fade or peel, and the frame underneath has room to dry.
How They Use It
The homeowner has a low deck that holds a sofa, a dining set, and the grill, and it stays presentable for cookouts and daily use without any coating to keep up.
