From Start to Finish
What We Found
Before the project, the backyard had a small concrete landing that was too tight for furniture and didn’t connect well to the rest of the yard. The homeowner had to step down awkwardly from the rear door, and the area around the back of the house felt unfinished. They wanted a proper deck that would create more usable space for family time and casual outdoor entertaining.
What Made It Tricky
The back door sat slightly higher than the grade in the yard, so the deck height and stair layout had to be planned carefully. There was also limited space near the side fence, which meant the footprint needed to stay compact while still allowing room for a grill and seating.
How We Built It
We framed the deck with pressure-treated lumber and set the structure on concrete footings sized for the existing grade. To give the project a finished look, we added a composite picture-frame border in charcoal gray, installed white vinyl railings, and built a set of 48-inch-wide stairs for safer access to the yard. The team also made sure the layout left enough open area below for easy maintenance and drainage.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck added a clean, functional outdoor extension to the home and made the back entrance much easier to use. The contrast between the wood decking and darker border gave the space a neat, tailored look without overcomplicating the design. It now feels like a real part of the home instead of just a small landing.
How They Use It
The homeowner now uses the deck for morning coffee, weekend cookouts, and a place for the kids to sit outside. It’s become the main outdoor hangout spot for the house.
