Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

Before the project, the rear of the Paterson home had a small, worn landing that didn’t leave enough room for furniture or a grill. The old wood surface was weathered and uneven, and the step down to the yard felt awkward when coming out from the kitchen. The homeowner wanted a proper deck that would make the backyard more usable and look more finished.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The back door sat higher than the yard, so the deck height and stair run had to be planned carefully to keep the transition comfortable and code-compliant. There was also limited room along one side of the house, which meant the new footprint needed to stay efficient without cutting into the usable seating area.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We built a pressure-treated frame sized to the yard and set it on concrete footings for a solid base. The deck surface was finished with composite boards in a walnut-brown color, and we added white vinyl railings with black balusters for a clean look that matches the home well. Wide stairs were installed for easier access, and the layout was kept simple so the space would feel open and practical.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The finished deck added a clean, functional outdoor extension to the home and made the rear entrance much easier to use. The contrast between the brown deck boards and white railings gives the project a sharp, pulled-together look. It now feels like a real part of the house instead of just a small landing.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowners now use the deck for morning coffee, grilling, and sitting outside with the kids. It quickly became the main hangout spot in the backyard.
