From Start to Finish
What We Found
Before the project, the Fair Lawn home had a small concrete landing off the back door that felt cramped and didn’t give the family much room to use the yard. The step down to the lawn was awkward, and the area around the rear entry looked unfinished and dated. The homeowner wanted a proper deck that would make the backyard easier to enjoy day to day.
What Made It Tricky
The back door sat higher than the yard, so the deck height and stair layout needed to be measured carefully to keep the transition smooth and code-compliant. The property also had a narrow side clearance near the fence line, which meant the footprint had to stay efficient while still leaving enough space for seating.
How We Built It
We installed a pressure-treated framing system on concrete footings and topped it with composite boards in a two-tone gray combination for a clean, low-maintenance finish. White vinyl railings with black balusters were added to match the home, and we built a wide 6-step staircase to improve access to the yard. The layout was kept open and practical so the family could move furniture, grill, and walk through the space comfortably.
The Finished Deck
The finished deck created a real outdoor extension of the home and made the rear entrance much more useful. The gray composite surface gives the backyard a neat, finished look, while the white railings add a crisp contrast from the yard. It now feels like part of the house instead of just a small landing.
How They Use It
The homeowners now use the deck for grilling, family dinners, and relaxing outside in the evenings. It gave them a simple, usable space that fits their routine well.
