Project Story

From Start to Finish

Discovery

What We Found

The backyard had an old, uneven pressure-treated platform that had started to soften in a few spots and no longer felt safe for regular use. The existing setup was too small for outdoor seating, and the worn boards made the space look tired from the back door.

The Challenge

What Made It Tricky

The rear yard had a narrow access path, so materials had to be brought in carefully without disturbing the lawn too much. The deck also needed to tie in cleanly with an existing concrete landing while keeping the finished height comfortable for the kitchen doorway.

Our Approach

How We Built It

We removed the old structure, checked the framing area, and built the new deck with pressure-treated substructure materials and low-maintenance composite decking boards. White vinyl railings with black balusters were installed for a clean look, and we added code-compliant stairs down to the yard with solid footing. The layout was adjusted to make better use of the available space while keeping the transition from the house smooth.

The Result

The Finished Deck

The finished deck gives the home a much more functional outdoor area with enough room for a table, grill, and a couple of chairs. The composite surface and new railings give the backyard a cleaner, more finished look right off the back of the house.

Client Outcome

How They Use It

The homeowners now use the deck for morning coffee, grilling, and hosting family on the weekends. They liked that it added usable space without turning the yard into a maintenance project.

How We Built It

The Build Process

1

In-Home Estimate

We met with the homeowner in Elmwood Park to measure the space, review layout options, and select composite colors and railing style.

2

Removal and Site Prep

The old deck was taken down and the area was prepped for the new footprint, with attention to the tight side-yard access.

3

Framing and Decking Installation

We installed the new pressure-treated frame, then fastened the composite deck boards in a medium brown finish.

4

Railing and Stair Buildout

White vinyl railings, black balusters, and new stairs were added to complete the structure and meet code requirements.

5

Final Walkthrough and Cleanup

After the final inspection and cleanup, we reviewed the finished deck with the homeowner and confirmed everything was ready for use.

The crew was easy to work with and kept us updated the whole time. The new deck fits the yard perfectly and feels solid.
